About CSA Membership
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is the cultivation of a relationship between farmer and member. The farmer is responsible for supplying the member with a pre-determined weekly amount of produce for the length of the growing season. The benefits of a CSA include:
- You get to know your farmer and your produce!
- You support a local, small business owner, meaning your money goes directly to the farmer – no grocery store or distributor fees/cuts.
- Your produce is fresh, truly ripe, and harvested the day before or day of the CSA pick up date.
- Your produce is locally grown, and you know exactly what its journey has been – no mystery shelf life stabilizers or preservatives needed due to transportation and time sitting on the grocery shelf. Yes, even organic produce in the grocery can have preservatives/shelf life extenders! Some might consider that a little extra bang for your buck, but Boise Backlot Farms thinks it best to avoid all that nonsense… save the wax for your skis.
- You get to try new types of produce and different varieties of your favorites that you won’t be able to find in the grocery store. Grocery stores tend to stock produce varieties that ship well and have a long shelf life, not necessarily the varieties that have the greatest flavor or texture.
- You can avoid attending the weekend’s farmers market, which can often be a zoo.
Share Price and Membership Overview
All produce included in the weekly CSA are grown by Boise Backlot Farms and are seasonal, which means you get what is ready on the farm each week. You do not get to choose what is in your share each week. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of receiving new types of produce – you will receive recipe/cooking tips for direction and inspiration.
There are two share sizes: half and full.
- Half shares will feed 2-3 people. The cost of a half share is $28 each week or $504 for the season (plus tax).
- Full shares are great for a family of 4-6. The cost is $45 each week, or $810 for the season (plus tax).
Keep in mind items are grown seasonally, meaning the bounty and variety increase as the season progresses.
Each week, CSA members receive a variety of produce that is in season. Items may include:
- June: Lettuce, spinach, salad mix, radishes, broccoli, snap peas, bok choi, kohlrabi, beets, carrots, rhubarb, strawberries
- July/August: Kale, garlic, onions, salad greens, green beans, summer squash, peppers, beets, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, herbs & eggplant.
- September/October: Tomatoes, summer squash, cucumber, peppers, eggplant, winter squash, carrots, beets, lettuce, other greens & radish.
If you love trying new things, enjoy surprises and variety in your diet, and value your food being fresh and local, then a CSA will be perfect for you!
CSA Start/End Dates
Exact start and end dates are largely dependent on the weather. We estimate the season to run the first week of June through September. As we get closer, an update will be sent, but expect a 18-week season.
CSA Pick Up
Shares are picked up once a week throughout the season on Eugene St. in NW Boise on Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. **It is your responsibility to pick up your share each week. If you are unable to pick up your share, please arrange for a friend or family member to pick up your share for you. We cannot reimburse you the cost of a share if you miss your pick up.
